The History of the Game

Blackjack is a card game that is widely known as “21”. The history of the game goes way back to the 17th century. The game was mentioned for the 1st time in a book that Miguel de Cervantes has written. In that book, it was mentioned that two characters were enjoying a card game that resembled Blackjack to a high extent as the 2 players were playing a game and the purpose was to get a hand that has a total that is close to 21 without going past that number which is the same concept of Blackjack. In this game, also like Blackjack, the Ace counted as eleven points or one point, according to the hand.

The game has its own Hall of Fame that was established in 2002. This Hall of Fame is in the Barona Casino that is located in California. Upon its establishment, seven players were introduced. Every year, new players are inducted to the H.O.F.

This game is not a competitive game as players do not try to beat each other. At a table of blackjack, all of the seated players are trying to beat the hand of the dealer and not the fellow players. This is why players look at this game as a cooperative kind of game.

The Gaming Procedure and Rules

The gaming procedure of the game is the same in land-based and online casinos. The game begins as players place their initial wagers. The dealer will deal the players and himself two cards, the players’ cards will be facing up while the dealer will show one card and the other card will be facing down. Players will then decide whether they want to hit or stand. Hitting means that they are asking for an additional card while standing means that they do not want any more cards. After players stand, the dealer will reveal his card and he will be faced with the same options. Most Blackjack games will force the dealer to stop when he reaches soft or hard 17. The hand that is closer to 21 will win.

During the game play, players will be faced with a set of decisions, depending on their cards. If players get a pair, they will be able to split it. Therefore, if players get two jacks, they will be able to split them into two different hands and each hand will be played separately. The wager of each hand is equal the original wager that players have placed at the beginning of the game. Players can also double down. Doubling down means that players will double their wager and they will be able to get one additional card only. Most games only allow players to double down at hands that have a total of 9, 10 or 11.

Also, if the facing up card of the dealer happens to be an Ace, players can place a side bet called insurance. This insurance pays off if the dealer gets a 10-value card and hits a Blackjack. This insurance is equal half of the initial wager.
