The History of the Game

Poker is a card game that dates back to 1829. The game started to become popular in the United States in 1970 with the introduction of its own World Series, the World Series of Poker (WSOP). The game entered the mainstream media in 1980 as a recreational card game. It is a card game that needs a minimum of two players. In this game, the dealer does not participate in the game. The game has many versions. Each version has its own dealing order and procedure but the same concept.

There is only one poker hand ranking that is implemented in all poker games. This ranking is what determines the winner when the showdown occurs, the player who has the highest-ranking poker hand will win. Here is the ranking of the hands from the lowest to the highest hand:

High Card:

When players do not have any poker hand, the player whose hand has the higher card will be declared the winner.

A pair is when a player has two identical cards such as 2 Jacks, 2 Queens, 2 Sevens and so on. Unlike ten value cards are not a pair, unlike blackjack.

Two Pair:

Players who have two sets of pairs will have “Two Pairs”. For example, 2 Jacks + 2 Sevens, 2 Tens + 2 Fours and so on.

Three of a Kind:

Players who have three identical cards such as 3 Jacks, 3 Tens, 3 fours and so on will have “three of a kind”.

Players who have a poker hand that has five consecutive card values such as 5, 6, 7 ,8 ,9 and 10 will have a straight.

A Flush is when a player has a poker hand that consists of five cards of the same suit.

Straight Flush:

It is when players have five consecutive numbers that have the same color and suit.

Full House:

It is when a player has a pair and a three of a kind. For example, having 3 Fours + 2 Jacks.

Four of a Kind:

It is when players have four identical cards such as 4 Jacks, 4 Queens, 4  Sevens and so on.

Royal Flush:

This is the highest poker hand ever. Players who have a straight flush that starts with a 10 and ends with an Ace will have a royal flush.

Texas Hold’em Poker

This version of poker is arguably the most commonly played poker version. This is due to the introduction of hole card cameras and online gambling.

The game starts as players place an Ante bet, which is an obligatory bet to enter the game. Each player will then be handed two cards facing down then players will start to raise and re-raise. The dealer will then put three cards facing up on the table. Another round of betting will take place then the dealer will deal two other cards on the table facing up with a wagering round between them. When there are five cards on the table, the last wagering round will begin. After players call the bets or fold, the showdown will take place and the player with the best poker hand will claim the pot.
