The History of the Game

Slot machines are also known as fruit machines, poker machines and one-armed bandits. Each name has a story behind it. For example, “Poker Machines” was due to the fact that the early slot machines had poker symbols on them and “Fruit Machines”, was due to the fact that the symbols that appeared on the reels were fruits and the rewards came in the form of fruit-flavored gum.

The rewards that players would claim developed throughout the years. For example, the slots used to reward players in the form of gum, free drinks, and free sandwiches but now, players play this game in order to win cash. Therefore, the game is considered a gambling game and players can only enjoy it at licensed gambling venues, whether land-based or online.

A slot machine in its simplest form is a machine that has three spinning reels. Players will insert a coin to initiate the game. Players will then pull the lever (or click on spin if it is an online slot machine) and the reels will start spinning. There is something called the payline or the winning line. In classical slots, it is usually the middle line. Players have to get a certain combination of symbols on that line in order to claim a reward.

Players will be able to see all of the winning combos in the paytable. This paytable is a table that can be found printed on the slot machine that shows players the different combinations of symbols that they have to achieve on the winning line and their payouts. At online slots, the paytable can be found next to the reels or players will be able to view it by clicking on “View Pays” or “View Payouts”. The symbols that appear on the reels vary between one game and another. The classical machines usually have one bar, two bars, three bars, cherries, bells, 7s and other fruits.

Due to the popularity of slot machines, major gaming developers for online casinos such as Microgaming, Playtech and Cryptologic among others started to upgrade the slots by adding more paylines and features. There are games that have up to 1024 paylines.  These games allow players to choose the ways or the lines they want to wager on. These advanced and modern slot machines can offer animated symbols (video slots).

Each video slot has its own theme. The symbols, the features, the graphics, the audio effects and the layout of the game would be inspired by that theme. These themes can be about anything including ancient civilizations such as the Mayan civilization, the ancient Egyptian civilization and the time of the Pharaohs and the Aztec civilization. They can also be themed around certain TV shows or movies such as the Marvel Branded slot machines. These video slots would feature characters and items from the movies. Some of these games would also feature certain clips from the movie that players can watch when they get specific combos or win a great payout. These games offer plenty of features such as wild symbols, scatters, jackpots and bonus rounds. Players can know the special features of each game by clicking on “View Pays”.
